What is the Hermann Landmarks Commission?

When does the Landmarks Commission meet?
The Landmarks Commission meets monthly on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall to consider applications for Certificates of Appropriateness and other preservation matters.
What is a Certificate of Appropriateness?
A Certificate of Appropriateness, often called a COA, is an approval required for certain exterior projects in the Historic Overlay District. The review helps ensure that proposed work is compatible with Hermann’s historic character.
Does ordinary maintenance require a Certificate of Appropriateness?
In many cases, no. Ordinary maintenance or repair of exterior architectural elements generally does not require a Certificate of Appropriateness. Examples may include painting trim, roof repair, gutters, fascia, soffit if using the same material, and repair of chimneys, windows, and doors.
What kinds of projects usually require review?
Projects involving replacement of windows, chimneys, roofs, siding, and doors generally require a Certificate of Appropriateness.
Does replacing a damaged porch, balcony, railing, or deck require review?
Replacement of damaged or unsafe porches, balconies, railings, decks, and similar features generally does not require a Certificate of Appropriateness when the replacement uses the same style and material.
Are driveways reviewed by the Landmarks Commission?
No. Driveways and flat work are not reviewed by the Landmarks Commission.
Can I paint my building?
Paint using colors from the historic palette does not require Landmarks Commission review. Unpainted brick in the Historic Overlay District may not be painted. Painted brick may be repainted using a color selected from the historic color palette available at Hermann Lumber Company.
